In the world of technology, there are few symbols that are as present in our lives as the Windows 10 logo and desktop wallpaper. Even though Windows 11 has been available for more than two years, it is still the first visual experience more than a billion users have when they turn on their computer, most of whom do not change their desktop wallpaper.

The birth of the iconic wallpaper

The Windows 10 "Hero" image marks a major milestone in the history of the operating system. Released in July 2015, it marked a shift to the Windows service model, in which rapid digital updates replaced major releases. The identity was designed to embody the essence of Windows - adaptability and drive.

Bradley G. Munkowitz, also known as GMUNK, was the creator of the "Hero" image. His approach was to present the Windows logo as a portal, a gateway that invites users into the digital world.

Creating a visual narrative

The GMUNK team started shooting live footage, using clever camera angles and spatial lighting to bring the logo to life. Photographer Joe Picard captured over 3,000 images using a 9k Phase One camera system. These images were meticulously selected and combined in post-production.

Reactions

The "Hero" image was met with mixed reactions. While some drew parallels with GMUNK's work in "Tron: Legacy", others criticised the image for its dystopian tone. However, the effort and creativity put into the background image was widely acknowledged. Regardless of the opinions expressed, the image has become a lasting symbol, a bridge between the past and the future.
